CoDI Grange
CoDI Grange is a site-specific sound commission for the Chapel Multi-Faith Space featuring new music from composers Jo Thomas, Ashley John Long, Delyth and Angharad Jenkins, Teifi Emerald, Leona Jones and Stacey Blythe.
Studio Response and the health board, in collaboration with Tŷ Cerdd, a group that promotes and celebrates the music of Wales, commissioned artists from a range of genres, with award-winning electronic composer Jo Thomas acting as lead artist to mentor others through the process.
Community engagement has been central to the development of CoDI Grange. The music creators worked with community partners including the Friends of Llanfrechfa Grange Walled Garden, Cwmbran Writers' Group, local choir Côr Aduniad and the Sanctuary refugee centre in Newport.
Tŷ Cerdd promotes and celebrates the music of Wales. CoDI is Tŷ Cerdd’s composer development initiative – a programme of creative collaborations, workshops and development pathways for music creators.
Jo Thomas said: “When I first was asked to work on this installation and to write music I was extremely excited. The idea was that anyone could go into the chapel space and listen to a piece of new music. I first saw the Multi-Faith Chapel at the end of January 2020. The chapel was still being built. I visited the space, listened to the acoustics and began to understand the dynamics of where I was going to work. It was a very small intimate space, perfect for close listening.”
The compositions respond to the Chapel Multi-Faith Space’s commitment to being a place of wellbeing and spirituality which offers a place of refuge, solace and sanctuary for all. The music’s development has also been shaped by artist engagement with the community within the health board’s catchment area. Due to the pandemic, this engagement unfolded online. As Jo Thomas says: “Because we worked together online for most of the pandemic, the music has grown and developed outside the chapel. I think it has the potential to become accessible very naturally to people.”
Jo Thomas – A Sketch of Nature
A Sketch of Nature has been created by Jo Thomas in response to the Llanfrechfa Walled Garden at the Grange. Jo’s research meandered between images of the Old Grange Hospital, the poems of Welsh poet Elizabeth Hourcort Mitchell (who lived in the Old Grange in 1860), the gardens at Tredegar House in Newport and Plas Newydd in Anglesey, alongside the memories shared by volunteer gardeners at the Llanfrechfa Grange Walled Garden, with whom Jo worked collaboratively on a sound-mapping workshop.
The piece unfolds in four parts: Water Revelations is based on the fountain near the entrance of the garden; Rock-wall is based on the rocks in the garden’s wall, which are from all over Wales; Rotations is about grains of soil and the rotating nature of the planting beds; Polyplastic is based on the roof of the plastic greenhouse and descriptions of the sound inside when the weather is turbulent; Wide Blossom, the final work, is based on a memory shared in a workshop of meditating and reflecting near the Cherry Blossom tree.
Speaking about the form of the work, Jo said: “As an artist, I tend to work with structures and abstracted forms. I became interested in structures of planting and how this could reflect in some way in the music. Alan, one of the garden volunteers from the Grange, told me that the garden had ‘no straight lines’ in the planting. This stayed with me and is reflected in the form of the music in the way it ebbs and flows.”
Ashley John Long – Edau Bywyd
Composer Ashely Long John has created a work based on a sound that permeates the landscape – the bells of Llanfrechfa church. Alongside recordings of bell ringing, made with the help of resident bell ringers, Ashely worked with Cwmbran Writers' Group to gather new poetry which reflected on the landscape and its history.
“The poetry served as inspiration to the vocalists, and can also be read by the listener if they wish. I was keen to include contributions from as many members of the ward's communities as possible and, so, in addition to the musical material provided by the bells, the finished piece collects the voices of singers from the length and breadth of the ward as well as recordings of the natural world that surrounds the new hospital.”

Delyth and Angharad Jenkins – Cynefin
“Cynefin, a Welsh word that is difficult to translate, conveys the idea of usual abode or habitat, a place where everything around you feels right and welcoming. This piece of music is rooted in the area around this hospital.”

Cynefin draws together archival sound recordings from the NHS at 70 archive, voices from local choir Côr Aduniad and the sounds of nature and train travel. The music is flowing, featuring rich harmonic structures played on a harp. In Cynefin, Delyth and Angharad utilise the calming and healing effects of humming. Côr Aduniad recorded the sounds of humming based on blocks of harmonic structure composed by Delyth, which form the basis of the piece. Woven into this harmonic fabric, the choir sings a motif from the well-known traditional song ‘Ar Hyd y Nos’. This is pulled and stretched electronically, transforming it into an ocean of ethereal waves and echoes, which transports the listener into a liberating and peaceful imaginary.
Teifi Emerald – Glaw – Shoda
Composer Teifi Emerald’s work Glaw – Shoda is a rhythmic work in two parts.
The first half features a call to Rhowch y glaw i fi (Give me the Rain), considering rain as a source of softness and change, as water cleanses our feelings, loosening and healing us. One song also explores the mental health struggles that can come as night falls and the feeling of holding on through the darkness of night. The second half – Shoda – features a poem in Bengali by Modina Ferdous. Shoda translates as "the smell after the rain" – a word that does not exist in English or Welsh. The Welsh that follows responds to Modina Ferdous’ poem and reflects on feelings of renewal, freshness and change following struggle.
“I am honoured to include some Bengali in this piece – a language that has faced violence and erasure and a fight to keep the language alive. Bengali is now a language which is spoken by many people in South Wales. As a part of making this piece, I worked with the Sanctuary refugee centre in Newport, which is how I met Ferdous, a volunteer at the centre, and heard her poetry.”

Leona Jones – Sound of the Breeze, Song of the Waves
For the Sound of the Breeze, Song of the Waves composer Leona Jones began with the voices of the chaplains of the health board, recording individual readings of pieces of writing that meant something to each of them. This resulted in a diverse selection of poetry and prose, secular and religious, in English, Arabic and Bengali, which created the basis of Leona’s collaboration with musicians.
“I needed to find musicians who were prepared to take risks, to be part of a process in which no one would be sure of the end. I was also looking for people who were very empathic and understood how their music could reach out. There would be no written score because I’d be asking them to improvise. I concentrated on instruments which used breath because the etymological basis of ‘inspiration’ in English is the same as ‘breath’. To find the musicians, I contacted Gwent-based community orchestras and arts centres and the resulting group of five, playing seven instruments between them, couldn’t have been better. A beautiful range of improvisations resulted and were recorded, which I edited to create the soundscape.”

Stacey Blythe – Where the Veil is Thin
Where the Veil is Thin, composed by Stacey Blythe, draws on maps of the area, walking routes, and conversations with local poets which began with the question,‘What does water mean to you as you walk outside for rest and relaxation?’ Stacey spoke to cyclists, canal enthusiasts, walkers, canoeists and other local people, as well as Carole Jacob, the organiser for Friends of the Earth in Cwmbran.
“The jewel at the centre is a poem by Carole describing the treasure and power of her local countryside in Cwmbran. I finish her lyric with a final stanza of my own reflecting all the wonderful experiences I have had creating a 20-minute original sound journey for this fantastic project. This work has changed how I work as a composer… I now have skills I did not possess before and I am truly grateful for this magical opportunity.”

Mae ymgysylltu â'r gymuned wedi bod yn ganolog i ddatblygiad CoDI Grange. Gweithiodd y crewyr cerddoriaeth â phartneriaid cymunedol gan gynnwys Cyfeillion Gardd Furiog Llanfrechfa, Grŵp Awduron Cwmbrân, y côr lleol sef Côr Aduniad a chanolfan ffoaduriaid Sanctuary yng Nghasnewydd.
Mae Tŷ Cerdd yn hyrwyddo a dathlu cerddoriaeth Cymru. CoDI yw menter datblygu cyfansoddwyr Tŷ Cerdd - rhaglen o gydweithrediadau creadigol, gweithdai a llwybrau datblygu ar gyfer crewyr cerddoriaeth.
Dywedodd Jo Thomas: “Pan ofynnwyd i mi weithio gyntaf ar y gosodwaith hwn ac ysgrifennu cerddoriaeth roeddwn i ar ben fy nigon. Y syniad oedd y gallai unrhyw un fynd i’r capel a gwrando ar ddarn o gerddoriaeth newydd. Fe wnes i weld y Capel Aml-ffydd am y tro cyntaf ddiwedd mis Ionawr 2020. Roedd y capel yn dal wrthi’n cael ei adeiladu. Fe wnes i ymweld â'r lle, gwrando ar yr acwsteg a dechrau dod i ddeall dynameg y lle roeddwn i'n mynd i weithio. Roedd yn le bach a chlyd, perffaith ar gyfer gwrando manwl.”
Mae'r cyfansoddiadau'n ymateb i ymrwymiad y Capel Aml-ffydd i fod yn lle llesol ac ysbrydol sy'n cynnig lloches, cysur a noddfa i bawb. Crewyd A Sketch of Nature gan Jo Thomas mewn ymateb i Ardd Furiog Llanfrechfa yn y Faenor. Roedd ymchwil Jo yn ymdroelli rhwng delweddau o hen Ysbyty Llanfrechfa Grange, cerddi’r bardd o Gymru Elizabeth Hourcort Mitchell (a oedd yn byw yn yr Hen Faenor ym 1860), y gerddi yn Nhŷ Tredegar yng Nghasnewydd a Phlas Newydd ar Ynys Môn, ochr yn ochr â’r atgofion a rannwyd gan arddwyr gwirfoddol yng Ngardd Furiog Llanfrechfa, y bu Jo’n gweithio ar y cyd â nhw ar weithdy mapio sain.

Arweiniodd hyn at ddetholiad amrywiol o farddoniaeth a rhyddiaith, seciwlar a chrefyddol, yn Saesneg, Arabeg a Bengali, oedd yn sail i’r cydweithrediad rhwng Leona â’r cerddorion.

Stacey Blythe – Where the Veil is Thin
Mae Where the Veil is thin, a gyfansoddwyd gan Stacey Blythe, yn defnyddio mapiau o'r ardal, llwybrau cerdded, a sgyrsiau â beirdd lleol a ddechreuodd â'r cwestiwn, 'Beth mae dŵr yn ei olygu i chi wrth i chi gerdded yn yr awyr agored i orffwys ac ymlacio?' Siaradodd Stacey â beicwyr, selogion y gamlas, cerddwyr, canŵwyr a phobl leol eraill, yn ogystal â Carole Jacob, trefnydd Cyfeillion y Ddaear yng Nghwmbrân.

Jo Thomas is a composer and sound artist born and raised in Wales who now lives and works in London. She writes for concerts, galleries, sound-walks and commercial releases. Her work has been recognised with international awards. Jo identifies as disabled and is an advocate for fair access in the arts. She is vice-chair of Sound and Music and is a director of the Ivors Academy.

Ashley John Long is a composer and double bassist. He studied composition at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and gained his PhD at Cardiff University. Recent commissions have included three chamber operas and chamber music. His orchestral work, Karri, was premiered in 2019 by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He has also composed for media, dance and theatre, as well as works for jazz and improvising ensembles.
Mae Ashley John Long yn gyfansoddwr a basydd dwbl. Ar ôl astudio cyfansoddi yng Ngholeg Brenhinol Cerdd a Drama Cymru enillodd ddoethuriaeth ym Mhrifysgol Caerdydd. Mae comisiynau diweddar wedi cynnwys tair opera siambr a cherddoriaeth siambr. Perfformiwyd ei waith ar gyfer cerddorfa, sef Karri, am y tro cyntaf yn 2019 gan Gerddorfa Genedlaethol Gymreig y BBC. Mae hefyd wedi cyfansoddi ar gyfer y cyfryngau, dawns a theatr, ynghyd â sawl gwaith ar gyfer ensembles byrfyfyr a jazz.
Delyth and Angharad Jenkins are Swansea-based mother and daughter duo. Delyth (harp) and Angharad (fiddle) started performing together in 2007. They have been at the forefront of folk music in Wales through bands such as Calan and Aberjaber, as well as performing internationally as soloists. They have recorded studio albums, made extensive live performances and had numerous broadcasts including BBC Radio 2, 3 and 6 Music.
Mae Delyth ac Angharad Jenkins yn ddeuawd mam a merch o Abertawe. Dechreuodd Delyth (telyn) ac Angharad (ffidil) berfformio gyda'i gilydd yn 2007. Maent wedi bod ar flaen y gad ym maes cerddoriaeth werin yng Nghymru gyda bandiau megis Calan ac Aberjaber, yn ogystal â pherfformio'n rhyngwladol fel unawdwyr. Maent wedi recordio albymau stiwdio, wedi perfformio’n fyw yn helaeth ac wedi darlledu droeon ar BBC Radio 2, 3 a 6 Music.
Teifi Emerald is a music-creator, clown, spoken-word artist, theatre-maker and activist. She was nominated for Best Female Performer by the Theatre Critics Wales awards 2013. Her bilingual Welsh-English songwriting uses rich harmonies blended with soulful vocals and comedy weird-pop. She is a member of Ladies of Rage Cardiff and has performed with Kitsch n Sync Collective and the Sparklettes.

Leona Jones’ experimental practice is based in sound and she uses her own recordings to create abstract soundscapes as site-responsive events/performances/installations which highlight physicality and context. She considers sound in its widest definition and across symbiotic relationships with space and movement. Cross-disciplinary collaboration is central to her practice and she has worked with musicians, dancers and visual artists.
Mae gwaith arbrofol Leona Jones wedi'i seilio ar sain ac mae'n defnyddio ei recordiadau ei hun i greu seinweddau haniaethol fel digwyddiadau/perfformiadau/gosodiadau sy'n ymateb i'r safle ac sy'n amlygu’r ffisegol a’r cyd-destun. Mae'n ystyried sain yn ei ddiffiniad ehangaf ac ar draws berthnasoedd symbiotig â lle a symudiad. Mae cydweithio trawsddisgyblaethol yn ganolog i'w hymarfer ac mae wedi gweithio â cherddorion, dawnswyr ac artistiaid gweledol.
Stacey Blythe is a composer, performer and multi-instrumentalist. She writes regularly for Welsh National Opera's engagement department and has been nominated for a Paul Hamlyn Foundation Composer Award. She performs with the Welsh bands Ffynnon and Elfen, and has toured and recorded as a composer and performer with artists including Maria Hayes, Dylan Fowler, Julie Murphy and Meredith Monk.

Mae hi'n ysgrifennu'n rheolaidd ar gyfer adran ymgysylltu Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru ac wedi’i henwebu ar gyfer Gwobr Cyfansoddwr Sefydliad Paul Hamlyn.
