Together, We Are Giants
In 2018, poet Sophie McKeand was commissioned by ABUHB to write a poem which marked the 70th anniversary of the founding of the NHS. Titled Together, We Are Giants the poem has been installed outside the restaurant of the Grange University Hospital, alongside a companion poem in Welsh by Eurig Salisbury.
Sophie said: “Before writing this poem, I spent hours immersed in the compelling political speeches of the NHS’s founder, Aneurin Bevan. From here, I channelled Nye’s voice and socialist beliefs, shaping the language in memory of him in order to acknowledge the fact that the NHS wouldn’t exist without his remarkable determination and vision. Nye also held the conviction that when people work together, communities can achieve unimaginable feats of greatness.”
Yn 2018, comisiynwyd y bardd Sophie McKeand gan BIP Aneurin Bevan i ysgrifennu cerdd i ddathlu 70 mlynedd ers sefydlu'r gwasanaeth iechyd. Yn dwyn y teitl Together, We Are Giants mae'r gerdd wedi cael ei gosod y tu allan i fwyty Ysbyty Athrofaol y Faenor, ochr yn ochr â cherdd gyfatebol yn Gymraeg gan Eurig Salisbury.
Meddai Sophie: “Cyn ysgrifennu'r gerdd hon, treuliais oriau yn ymgolli yn areithiau gwleidyddol grymus sylfaenydd y gwasanaeth iechyd, Aneurin Bevan. Yna, fe wnes i sianelu ei lais a'i ddaliadau sosialaidd, gan lunio'r iaith er cof amdano i gydnabod y ffaith na fyddai'r GIG yn bodoli heb ei benderfyniad a'i weledigaeth ryfeddol. Roedd Aneurin Bevan hefyd yn argyhoeddedig y gall cymunedau gyflawni gorchestion anhygoel pan fydd pobl yn cydweithio.”

Sophie McKeand is a poet whose work explores water and earth, migration and roots, the natural world, and our interspecies relations. After selling, donating and gifting 95 per cent of her belongings in 2017, Sophie now permanently slow-travels across Europe in a self-converted van with her partner and two rescue-hounds.
