From Ladybirds to Outer Space

Andy O’Rourke - a Newport-based muralist, illustrator, designer and facilitator - has created a series of murals for the hospital. You will find flora, fauna and wildlife depicted in the Children’s Nature Garden, and rockets and planets on the external generator below the children’s bedrooms. In the Walled Garden, Sugar Loaf and the Skirrid mountains can be found framed by the garden volunteers’ favourite plants.

Andy said: ‘I wanted to create the feeling of being surrounded by flora and fauna. I love the idea that, from a child's perspective, the grass and leaves tower above you and that the insects, flowers and birds are as big as you are. All the species illustrated can be seen locally. There are several common species that everyone would know - including a robin, oak leaves and daisies, but there are other much rarer species such as the small scabious mining bee which has been discovered in the area only recently.’

Mae Andy O'Rourke - murluniwr, darlunydd, dylunydd a hwylusydd o Gasnewydd - wedi creu cyfres o furluniau ar gyfer yr ysbyty. Fe welwch ddarluniau o blanhigion, anifeiliaid a bywyd gwyllt yng Ngardd Natur y Plant, a rocedi a phlanedau ar y generadur allanol o dan ystafelloedd gwely'r plant. Yn yr Ardd Furiog, gellir gweld mynyddoedd Pen y Fâl ac Ysgyryd Fawr wedi'u hamgylchynu gan hoff blanhigion gwirfoddolwyr yr ardd.

Meddai Andy: 'Roeddwn i eisiau creu'r teimlad o gael fy amgylchynu gan blanhigion ac anifeiliaid. Rwyf wrth fy modd â'r syniad, o safbwynt plentyn, bod y glaswellt a'r dail yn dalach na chi a bod y pryfed, y blodau a'r adar cymaint â chi. Mae'r holl rywogaethau yn y murluniau i'w gweld yn lleol. Mae nifer o rywogaethau cyffredin y byddai pawb yn eu hadnabod - gan gynnwys robin goch, dail y dderwen a llygad y dydd, ond mae yna rywogaethau eraill llawer prinnach fel y wenynen durio fach sydd ond wedi cael ei darganfod yn yr ardal yn ddiweddar.'
