Katherine Jones, A Visit from a Stork
A Visit from a Stork
Katherine Jones has created two artworks for the maternity department, drawing for inspiration on local bodies of water and folkloric tales of storks delivering babies. She notes that storks now have a special relevance because they recently have been successfully reintroduced to the UK after becoming extinct, with the first pair of breeding storks for 600 years having their own young.
The drawings reference Cwmbran boating lake and locations along the Afon Lwyd - the river running through Cwmbran. We see 450-year-old Llan yr Afon Manor, now a rural heritage centre, and the Afon Lwyd Weir and bridge, at Pontymoile. These structures anchor the surrounding landscapes, which is formed of detailed patterns in black and white with hints of yellow and blue.
Katherine said: “It was a fantastic project to be asked to do by Studio Response and wonderful to see it brought to life once installed in the maternity ward. I really enjoyed producing the two pieces at different scales. It was a lovely way for me to be able to link my bird drawings to the surrounding landscape, and anchor in some architectural features too.”
Mae Katherine Jones wedi creu dau waith celf ar gyfer yr adran famolaeth, gan ddefnyddio cyrff dŵr lleol a chwedlau llên gwerin am giconia yn dod â babanod fel ysbrydoliaeth. Noda fod ciconiaid yn arbennig o berthnasol nawr gan iddynt gael eu hailgyflwyno'n llwyddiannus i'r DU yn ddiweddar ar ôl diflannu o'r tir, gyda'r pâr cyntaf o giconiaid bridio ers 600 mlynedd yn magu eu cywion eu hunain.
Mae'r darluniau'n dangos llyn cychod Cwmbrân a lleoliadau ar hyd Afon Lwyd - yr afon sy'n rhedeg drwy Gwmbrân. Gwelwn Blasty Llan yr Afon, sy'n 450 oed a bellach yn ganolfan dreftadaeth wledig, a Chored a phont Afon Lwyd, ym Mhont-y-moel. Mae'r strwythurau hyn yn angori'r tirweddau cyfagos, sydd wedi'u ffurfio o batrymau manwl mewn du a gwyn gydag arlliw o felyn a glas.
Meddai Katherine: “Roedd yn brosiect gwych i Studio Response ofyn i mi weithio arno ac roedd yn hyfryd ei weld yn dod yn fyw ar ôl ei osod yn y ward famolaeth. Fe gefais fwynhad mawr yn creu'r ddau ddarn ar wahanol raddfeydd. Roedd yn ffordd hyfryd i mi gysylltu fy narluniau adar â'r dirwedd, ac ymgorffori rhai nodweddion pensaernïol hefyd."
