Howard Bowcott, NURTURE

NURTURE

Howard Bowcott’s outdoor sculptures encourage staff and patients to make use of the hospital grounds and to connect with a more contemplative experience, within nature’s life cycles.

NURTURE unfolds across a dedicated staff seating area and a series of waymarkers, which lead people out and around the grounds, via the walled garden. Three large benches in the staff seating area are inspired by the organic shapes of seeds.

My aim is that the seating space will provide a sanctuary for staff, combining the restorative effect of sitting within a natural setting and the feeling of being embraced by the sculptures. Somewhere special, created with care.” – Howard Bowcott

The waymarkers echo the idea of seeds and life cycles, specifically the life of an oak tree, with each waymarker inthe shape of an acorn cup. Around the route, eight waymarkers show the tree’s lifespan, with each featuring pointers and distance.

“The idea for the images of an acorn growing into a 500-year-old tree as you follow the route around the grounds came from consultations with members of staff, and is a great example of how collaboration is at the heart of good public art.” – Howard Bowcott

Mae cerfluniau awyr agored Howard Bowcott yn annog staff a chleifion i ddefnyddio tir yr ysbyty ac i gysylltu â phrofiad mwy myfyriol, o fewn cylchoedd bywyd natur.

Mae NURTURE i'w weld ar draws ardal eistedd bwrpasol i'r staff a chyfres o arwyddbyst, sy'n arwain pobl allan o dir yr ysbyty ac o'i amgylch, drwy'r ardd furiog. Mae tair mainc fawr yn yr ardal eistedd i staff wedi'u hysbrydoli gan siapiau organig hadau.

“Fy nod yw y bydd y gofod eistedd yn darparu noddfa i staff, gan gyfuno effaith adferol eistedd mewn lleoliad naturiol a’r teimlad o gael eu cofleidio gan y cerfluniau. Rhywle arbennig, wedi'i greu gyda gofal.” - Howard Bowcott

Mae'r arwyddbyst yn adleisio'r syniad o hadau a chylchoedd bywyd, yn benodol bywyd y dderwen, gyda phob arwyddbost ar siâp cwpan mesen. O amgylch y llwybr, mae wyth o arwyddbyst yn dangos hyd oes y goeden, gyda phob un yn cynnwys saethau a phellter.

“Daeth y syniad am y delweddau o fesen yn tyfu i fod yn goeden 500 mlwydd oed wrth i chi ddilyn y llwybr o amgylch y tir o ymgynghoriadau ag aelodau o staff, ac mae'n enghraifft wych o sut mae cydweithredu wrth wraidd celf gyhoeddus dda.” - Howard Bowcott
